The legend of the Giant Panda.

The idea of my animation was to be viewed at the beginning of the panda enclosure of Edinburgh, grabbing the interest of the zoo’s clientele with story telling and then giving a few facts about China and it’s pandas along the way.

It shows the Tibetan folklore story of how the Giant Panda got it’s beautiful black markings. In China they used to tell stories using shadow puppets. I found this very interesting so decided to design my animation in a similar sort of style.  I used tea stained paper to get the background colour, and created a few black silhouette illustrations.

In China pandas are a symbol of peace, some say they represent ‘Yin and Yang’, the balance of forces in the natural world. Based on this and the actual colour of the Panda I created illustrations that are also black

and white.

I have a huge passion for pandas and this project let me travel to see Yang Guang and Tian Tian in Edinburgh Zoo. Most of my illustrations are inspired by the photos I took at Edinburgh zoo as well as different plants, scenery, wildlife and people of China and Tibet.
